Papua New Guinea’s newly crowned Miss Bird of Paradise, Iampela Popena, is preparing to take the country’s colours to the regional spotlight as she heads to Fiji for the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant later next month.
Miss Popena, who will represent PNG at the pageant in Nadi from February 13 to 20, said the opportunity comes with deep responsibility and pride, especially as a daughter of Western Highlands Province.

She said carrying the flag for both her province and the nation was a humbling experience, one she attributes to faith, support, and commitment to service. “It is by God’s grace that I have come this far and will continue to humbly stand by my people and serve them,” she said.
Preparations are now intensifying as Team Miss Bird of Paradise rolls out its program to ready Miss Popena for the regional competition. Training includes public speaking sessions and a review of submissions received through the Expressions of Interest call issued by MBOP PNG.
Chair Lady of Miss Bird of Paradise PNG, Anna Bais, said the organisation’s growing experience in regional pageants places the team in a strong position this year. She noted that Miss Popena will be the youngest contestant on the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant stage, bringing with her enthusiasm and a fresh outlook.
“This year, our reigning Miss Bird of Paradise will be the youngest contestant on the MPIP stage,” Ms Bais said. “She brings youthful energy, enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective of a young Papua New Guinean woman.”
In response to online bullying experienced by contestants during last year’s regional pageant, MBOP PNG has also tightened its cyber safety measures. A national cyber safety campaign was conducted during the recent pageant, encouraging respectful online behaviour, while official social media pages are now actively monitored.
The public has been urged to rally behind Miss Popena and help foster a positive environment for all contestants competing on the regional platform.
“Being the representative of our country on a regional platform is no easy feat. Let’s all stand behind our queen and ensure she knows we are supporting her,” Ms Bais said.
