Papua New Guinea’s national carrier Air Niugini has raised the bar for international travel, introducing its new high-tech Airbus A220-300 aircraft on the Port Moresby–Sydney route. The inaugural PNG flight departed on Sunday, March 29, marking a fresh chapter in the airline’s push to modernise its services.
The new aircraft now operates on one of PNG’s busiest international corridors, strengthening links between Papua New Guinea and Australia. Sydney becomes the second overseas destination to welcome the A220-300 following its earlier rollout on the Cairns route.

With the introduction of the aircraft, Air Niugini has increased its Sydney services to three flights per week. The schedule—running on Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays—offers passengers greater flexibility when travelling between Port Moresby and Sydney.
Travellers flying from Sydney will also have access to wider connections across Papua New Guinea and into regional destinations such as Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Honiara, Port Vila and Nadi, with services to Japan expected to begin later this year.
The Airbus A220-300 introduces a modern onboard experience, featuring a two-class configuration with seating for 138 passengers. The aircraft offers wider seats, larger windows, quieter cabins and onboard Wi-Fi, providing a more comfortable journey for travellers.
Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne said the aircraft’s deployment reflects the airline’s commitment to improving service standards.
“The deployment of the Airbus A220-300 to Sydney is a significant development for Air Niugini as we continue to modernise our fleet and expand our international reach. This aircraft brings a new level of comfort and efficiency to our operations and reinforces our commitment to providing a higher standard of service to our passengers travelling between Papua New Guinea and Australia.”
Mr Milne said Sydney remains a vital hub for business, tourism and family travel, adding that the increased frequency would further strengthen ties between the two countries.
“Sydney is a key destination within our international network. By increasing our services and introducing the A220-300 on this route, we are enhancing accessibility and creating more opportunities for travel, trade and economic engagement between our two countries.”
Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Scott Charlton also welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step for both nations.
“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Air Niugini at Sydney Airport. The introduction of the modern Airbus A220-300 on this route not only enhances comfort for passengers but also reflects a shared commitment to efficiency and sustainable growth.
“We’re proud to support Air Niugini as it expands its presence in Sydney and strengthens vital connections between Australia and Papua New Guinea.”
The airline plans to progressively phase out older aircraft on the Sydney route as more A220-300s arrive, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact while continuing to deliver safer and more reliable services for PNG travellers.
